Image: Microsoft One of Microsoft’s goals for Xbox Game Pass is to bring the Xbox experience and its library of games to as many users as possible by enabling the subscription service on an increasing number of platforms that already includes consoles, Windows 10 PCs, and Android devices with its cloud streaming technology. According to files discovered by an r/AndroidTV user in the latest APK of Xbox Game Pass, one of the next platforms that will officially include support for the game subscription service is Android TV, Google’s operating system designed for smart TVs, digital media players, and similar devices. This is alluded to by a 320×180 TV banner that clearly shows the Xbox Game Pass logo. While an Xbox Game Pass app is already available through the Google Play Store and can be side-loaded onto Android TV devices like the Chromecast, the official Xbox Game Pass app for Android TV will almost assuredly be better with improvements that could include a layout that’s properly optimized for TVs and other larger displays. Since Android TV is just Android, it’s not difficult to imagine Microsoft’s cloud gaming service being there. Judging from the evidence on hand, it should only be months or weeks before it shows up. If you want to stream Xbox games on your Android phone or tablet, you can just head to the Google Play Store. There, you’ll find the official Xbox Game Pass Android TV is just Android, it’s strange that you can’t find a TV-optimized version of the app. However, it looks like that’s going to change soon. We have two strong bits of evidence to suggest that we’ll see Xbox cloud gaming on Android TV in the near future. A Redditor found that when you teardown the Game Pass APK, you can find a banner image for the app that matches what you’d find on Android TV. Since any Android TV-optimized app would need this banner image — and apps not optimized wouldn’t — it’s pretty clear what the intention is second bit of evidence comes from 9to5Google. The team there found that if you sideload the Xbox Game Pass app, it loads a banner image to the Android TV home screen. The app still isn’t on the TV version of the Play Store and its functionality is still all kinds of wonky, but we can be assured that Microsoft is laying down the proper from this information, we guess we’ll see Xbox Game Pass on Android TV within a few months or even sooner. A big pitch of cloud gaming is cross-device compatibility. All cloud gaming services promise that you can play all your games on multiple devices, including a phone, PC, tablet, laptop, and even in a web browser. However, smart TVs haven’t been on the radar of cloud gaming providers up until recently. Google finally expanded Stadia to Android TVs last month, and now Microsoft is on course to follow suit. As discovered by Reddit user /el_gonz87, the latest APK of Xbox Game Pass is laying the groundwork for Android TV support. When the Redditor decompiled the APK, he found a banner image for Android TV, suggesting that the app will soon officially arrive on the platform. Android TV apps are required to have a banner image of a specific size in order to show up on the launcher, and that’s what the latest version of the Xbox Game Pass has added. Although the Xbox Game Pass app is available on the Google Play Store, there’s no official version available for Android TV at the moment. Since Android TV is still, well, Android, it was always possible to sideload the Xbox Game Pass app onto an Android TV device such as Chromecast. However, anyone that’s tried it can tell you it’s not worth the effort because the layout is poorly optimized for TV, the app can’t be easily navigated with a controller, and streaming can be buggy. The official version will likely fix these issues as it will have a TV-optimized layout and proper remote/controller support. Moreover, with the official Android TV app, users won’t have to go through the hassle of sideloading the APK. Separately, 9to5Google found that when they sideloaded the latest Xbox Game Pass APK on a Chromecast, it showed up on the homescreen.
